TRADITIONAL OKINAWA KARATE (ARIZONA)

SEIYO-KAI SHORIN-RYU KARATE

World Federation of Traditional Karate & Kobudo

Gilbert, Arizona

ABOUT OUR MARTIAL ART

Seiyo Kai Shorin-Ryu Karate is a traditional Okinawan karate & self-defense. Shorin-Ryu is one of the earliest forms of karate that originated from White Crane Kung Fu in China. Learn traditions of martial arts including self-respect, self-esteem & respect for others. Seiyo Kai was created from traditional Shorin-Ryu and tweaked making this a powerful and pragmatic martial art.

SPORT

We do not emphasize sport karate as we believe this is antipathic to development of the individual. Members compete only with themselves. Those who desire competition, we assist in training & work closely to keep their focus, but we do not formally sanction sport karate even though we have regional, national, and international champions who we are proud of. Of the members who have competed, 97% have earned gold, silver or bronze medals. We are equally proud of our members who earn their obi (ranks) and recognition through various scholastic programs.

WHAT IS KARATE?

Karate is a form of self-defense, but it is also a philosophy and a way to improve oneself in society. If there is no philosophy, no tradition, no positive improvement of the individual, then it can not be classified as martial art. Karate (or kara te) means empty hand, but kara is related to the sanskrit term mushin or no mind, and has deep philosophical meaning.

WHAT IS KOBUDO?

Kobudo is the ancient way of martial arts weapons. All members in Shorin-Ryu learn to use the traditional weapons of Okinawa as well as modern weapons. These include nunchaku, tonfa (batons), kama (sickles), sai, surichin (weighted rope), manriki (chain), kuwa (hoe), tsue (cane), katana (sword), naginata (halberd), yari (spear), bo (6-foot staff), hanbo (3-foot staff), kioga (expandable baton), kobutan (short stick), nitan bo (two sticks), and others.

EMPHASIS OF SEIYO SHORIN-RYU

Seiyo Shorin-Ryu emphasizes kata (forms) and bunkai (applications). We have more than 70 forms. These forms are practiced along with their applications, so that ever single move in every kata is understood and can be used in self-defense. Kata were developed in Okinawa to disguise karate practice from occupying Japanese samurai. We also have techniques to tweak one's strikes, blocks and kicks so that one can develop a one-punch knockout. However, we emphasize dojo kun which includes kara te ni sente nashi translating as 'there is no first attack in karate' as karate is used only for self-defense and self-improvement.
